Mucus ThinnersMucus thinners, such as mucolytics, are inhaled medications that help thin the mucus in the airways so you can cough it out of your lungs more easily. The two main types of mucus thinners are hypertonic saline and dornase alfa (Pulmozyme®).
If you use a bronchodilator, use it before inhaling hypertonic saline. Then, if you use dornase alfa, use that next, before doing your airway clearance techniques. Following this order will make the time you spend doing your airway clearance techniques more efficient and your cough more productive. The mucus will be easier to move from your smaller airways into your larger ones if your airways are already widened and your mucus is thinner and less sticky. Learn more about: |
